Barren River Lake Tournament Cancelled and to be Rescheduled to a Later Date

After much consideration and consultation with others, the Kentucky Outdoor Adventures Bluegrass Showdown Presented by Decked has be cancelled and postponed until a later date.  We ultimately made the decision to postpone and reschedule the tournament to a later date due to lower than expected registrations and communication issues during the registration period.  We were also over confident that deer season would not affect a tournament the size we were planning, but have heard and now seen otherwise.   We wanted to make this a premier event and give anglers across the state the chance to compete for a large pot along with some great giveaways.  Unfortunately, commuication issues with email and phone most likely took a toll on the registrations we received.  To be fair to the anglers and sponsors expecting a larger turnout, with a much larger cash prize, we will be postponing the tournament and will be looking for a date in early spring.

All anglers that have registered and pre-paid through PayPal will be refunded within the next 48 hrs.  If you mailed in your registration, we will be sending back your checks to the return address listed.  Once we make a final decision on the date / location of the rescheduled tournament, we will make an announcement to all of those who had already registered for the original event.  Your registrations and launch positions will be applicable to the rescheduled tournament if you so choose to participate.

While this was a very difficult decision to make, we feel it is in the best interest of the anglers who were expecting a much larger tournament and turnout.  We will reassess the registration process, streamline our communications, and make every effort to better advertise the next tournament to make it the event we were expecting.

GoPro 3 Way Mount | Product Review

gopro 3 way moutnAs an avid GoPro user and friend of the website, I thought I’d let all you GoPro users in on the latest mount produced by GoPro, the 3 Way Mount. I use my GoPro all the time. Whether I’m recording my personal fishing and hunting trips, family vacations, or using it for our outdoor media productions, the GoPro Hero has become an invaluable tool for me. Many anglers, hunters, and other outdoorsmen are using GoPro’s to capture their adventures so professional quality video and photography to record their experiences. Once only used in extreme sports, the GoPro Hero family of cameras are quickly making their way to the outdoor sports scene.

One of the greatest things about GoPro cameras are the multitude of mounting options for the camera. While fishing, I often use the GoPro Suction Cup Mount, GoPro Head Strap Mount, and the basic sticky mounts attached to the gunwales of my boat. Being able to mount the camera in multiple locations ensures that I’m able to capture all of the action and get the fight from the next lunker bass from start to finish. However, I often like to get underwater shots of netting or releasing a fish, and use the camera’s underwater capabilities to capture the action of different lures and baits when doing product spots for bait companies. However, that requires me to attach the GoPro to a pole so I can get the camera in place underwater. I was able to get around this by purchasing and extendable painting pole from Lowe’s and attaching the GoPro to the Handle Bar Mount. Many third-party companies made similar setups, but they almost always required another way to attach the GoPro to the pole…until now.

GoPro 3 Way Mount Review

GoPro 3 Way Mount 1The world’s most verstile camera now has the world’s most veratile mount with GoPro releasing Go-Pro 3 Way Mount.  I wonder what took GoPro so long to produce their own extendable arm, but it has finally arrived.  The unit works great as an extendable pole for “selfie” action shots such as the sample above, as a reliable way to get your GoPro submerged to capture some underwater fishing action, however the mount offers many other features packed inside. In fact the GoPro 3 Way Mount has 8 different configurations in one small, ultra-light weight piece. The 3 Way mount acts as an arm, a grip, and a tripod, and can be configured in a way to use just one or all three configurations to get the perfect aspect you need for your next video or still photo.

gopro 3 way mount 2After having the GoPro 3 Way Mount, I have found it as the most versatile mount the company have created.  Using the mount in the grip orientation, I have been able to produce much smoother, less shakier video than when I used to hand-hold the GoPro camera.  The storable, mini tripod is great for placing a camera in a great location to take still photographs or timelapse videos / action shots using either the GoPro App or Remote Control.  The extendable arm, which can be locked in many different angles, gives me much greater control of my shots than using just an extendable pole like before.  I can use the extension arm to get some really unique perspected both above and below water.  The arm locks in tight and won’t slip giving you a sturdy hold that will stay in place.  This is really handy for underwater shots as I found my old setup would occassionally loosen and the handlebar mount would slip while immersed.  While I really wished the arm extended a little further, I do undertand it would it would make the mount a bit heavier and bulkier, but a few extra inches would be great.

Overall, the GoPro 3 Way Mount is an excellent addition to the GoPro family of mounts.  The mount is ultra compact and lightweight and is so versatile it really is one of the best mounts out there.  If you are a GoPro user in the market for a new mounting option, consider the GoPro 3 Way Mount.  This single mount can take the place of 2 -3 other mounts in your GoPro aresenal.  The mount retails for $69.99 which is a little steep for a mount, but in my opinion it is money well spent.  If you are interested in picking up the 3-Way Mount click below to get the best price available.

Have fun capturing your adventures with the Hero 3+ Camera and the GoPro 3 Way Mount

Smart Lithium Batteries

smart lithium batteriesBattery technology has come a long way over the past decade.  We now have many different choices that perform better, last longer, and provide more power.  From Lithium Ion to Nickel Cadmium, rechargeable batteries are the future for your small electronics you use in your every day life.  Heck, we now even have cars that now run fully on batteries.  However, with all strides made in batteries, very little technology has crossed over into the marine world until very recently.

I was first introduced to Lithium Ion boat batteries while I was down with Ish Monroe during the Fish with Ish promotion put on by Day’s Boat Sales & Service.  In talking with Ish about the batteries I found myself very intrigued with the benefits of the Lithium Ion batteries and ended up picking up 3 12V Smart Lithium Batteries to run my Minn-Kota 36V Fortrex Trolling Motor and an additional 12.8 cold cranking battery from SMART Battery.  The SMART Battery Lithium batteries are a drop in replacement to your traditional lead acid batteries most anglers and boaters are currently using.  To be honest, I was first in sticker shock at the cost of the batteries, over $3,500 for all four batteries.  However once I’ve put them to use and did A LOT of research on the performance, lifespan, and charge time of the batteries, they were well worth the up front costs compared to traditional lead acid batteries.

SMART Battery Lithium Stats

  • 70% Lighter than Tradition Lead Acid Batteries
    • 15lbs for 12V 50AH Trolling & Cranking Batteries
    • I went from a couple hundred pounds of batteries to 60 lbs. which has been very noticeable in top speed and gas consumption.
  • 10x Longer Life than Traditional Lead Acid Betteries
    • Smart Lithium Batteries average between 3,000 – 5,000 cycles (that is full charge to to total discharge)
    • Even your high end Lead Acid Batteries will only get at most 100 cycles before they begin to lose capacity
  • Zero Maintenance
    • Just drop in the Smart Lithium Batteries and forget about them.
    • No need to check water levels to maintain the life of the batteries
    • No acid build up on the battery leads that cause power issues with your accessories and motor
  • 5 Year Battery Warranty
    • This warranty is unheard of in the marine battery industry.  Most lead acid batteries have a 1 year limited warranty and from my experience are a joke when trying to submit a warranty claim.

So how long will the SMART Lithium Batteries last?  Smart Battery advanced lithium technology will provide you with 2000 complete charge and discharge cycles at 80% DOD. After 2000 cycles, you will still have over 80% of usable energy left.  In terms of years, if you discharge 80% of the Smart Battery and then recharge it every day for 6 years, you will still have 80% of usable battery power left. This is a huge increase in lifespan compared to a typical AGM or Lead Acid battery rated at 300 cycles.

SMART Lithium Batteries are also full of technology to even further the life of your battery.  These batteries can be sufficiently charged by your alternator, inverter, standard charger, or the SMART Lithium Charger.  With SMART’s built in battery management system, you don’t have to worry about a thing.  Check out the saving chart below from Smart on the cost of ownership of Lithium vs. traditional Lead Acid Batteries

smart lithium batteries comparison

SMART Lithium Batteries Protection

Their internal safety system is designed with the latest technology allowing the ultimate battery protection.  The Smart Circuit board will protect the battery from almost any external accidental occurrence that would normally cause damage to a lithium battery. The internal Smart Circuit Board will automatically disconnect if the battery drains below 8 volts. It will automatically reconnect when the charger is turned on. This protects the battery from over-discharging and damaging the cells. This patented technology also protects the battery from Over-charge, Short Circuit and Reverse Polarity. The Hi Tech Smart Circuit Board is marine grade for maximum strength and reliability in the worlds most demanding environments. Designed to handle Heavy Duty High Amp Loads the Smart Circuit Board allows customers to use 100% of the rated capacity while maintaining maximum performance and life expectancy.

Kentucky Outdoor Adventures Opinion

Obviously when you plan on buying batteries, you don’t really plan on spending $2,000 for a set of four batteries.  But take a moment to look back at how long you’ve owned your boat and the cost you’ve incurred replacing your traditional batteries year after year.  If you’ve owned your boat for just about 5 years, you’ve probably invested the amount of money in 1 Smart Lithium Battery that would give you another good 5 years of power to your trolling motor and engine.  Owning a boat is a cash siphon is the first place, but by replacing your current lead acid batteries with Smart Lithium Batteries, you can drastically reduce your annual cost of owning you boat.  Yes, the upfront cost is a big one, but as you can see it will more than pay for itself in the long-run.  Add the excellent 5 year warranty, advanced technology, and great customer service, this is an easy choice to consider.  Heck, your batteries may even outlast your boat.  I know many B.A.S.S. Elite and FLW Anglers are switching over to lithium batteries, not because they are being paid to do so, but because they see the benefits and performance these batteries have over tradition lead acid batteries.  If you are willing to make the upfront investment in these batteries, you will be more than pleased with the performance and life that come with switching over to lithium.
